The Predator drone is what most people are familiar with from the military’s drone program, but the MQ-9 Reaper is certainly a force to be reckoned with. These are the newer, more capable versions of the previous drone and they are used for a variety of purposes.
As an upgrade to the Predator line, the Reaper has a 66 ft wingspan, a 14 hour flight time, and the ability to store 1,000 pounds of fuel. This gives it a great leg up, especially when considering the variety of weapons that are used with it compared to previous models that relied on hell fire missiles primarily.
Unfortunately, they are also the most accident prone drones in the lineup. In 2013 one fell into Lake Ontario, although over the past fifteen years there have been 129 accidents in total. This has caused quite a bit of controversy among drone opponents, who point to this danger as yet another reason that they should not be used.
With that being said, these are certainly an important part of the realm of modern warfare. Drones are being used more and more often to save American lives from having to be placed in combat conditions and even the surveillance capabilities of the Reaper drone can potentially save a great deal of resources as well.
